JUCO QB Malachi Marshall commits to FSU
Florida State has added arguably the top signal caller out of the junior college ranks to its roster, with quarterback Malachi Marshall committing to the Seminoles following his weekend official visit.
"The opportunity, that's all I ask for at the end of the day. The opportunity to do something great," Marshall said. "I've got real big dreams and aspirations for myself, and I feel like this is the place to accomplish them. So, why not Florida State?"
Marshall, the No. 2 quarterback in 247Sports' JUCO rankings, is the reigning NJCAA DI Football Offensive Player of the Year after guiding Iowa Western to a national championship. The 6-foot-2 signal caller had 33 passing touchdowns to 13 interceptions while completing 63 percent of his passes en route to 2,750 yards through the air.
The product of Rock Hill, S.C. played his first season of college football at FCS Stony Brook before going to junior college. He'll have three years of eligibility remaining to play two seasons and is expected to compete for the backup quarterback spot for the Seminoles, with a chance to then vie for a starting job depending on his performance as a reserve.
Marshall joins a quarterback room that includes Auburn transfer Ashton Daniels – the projected starter after Daniels transferred in during this winter Portal window – promising redshirt freshman Kevin Sperry, and recently committed FCS transfer Dean DeNobile. Freshman Jaden O'Neal is expected to miss the season with a knee injury.
He will enroll at FSU in June.
In the meantime, Marshall will take some visits to FSU so he can get further familiar with the program and system FSU runs, and will do some Zoom sessions with coaches as well.
"I'll be prepared when I get here," Marshall said.
