100-year-old IOW theatre usher celebrates by seeing show
A remarkable 100-year-old woman, who has dedicated her life to the theatre, shares her unique perspective on the art form. During World War II, she was evacuated to Hampshire, where she met her future husband, Bill. They married in 1947 and settled in London, but her journey took an unexpected turn after Bill's passing in 1998. Cilla returned to her beloved IOW, driven by a deep sense of belonging and a desire to continue her theater career.
Her passion lies in the connections she has made over the years. "I've made so many friends since working at the theatre," she says, her voice filled with warmth. "Whenever there's a show, and I get to participate, I look forward to it. It's a special experience, watching all the performances, but I have to be mindful of my health. I've been advised to avoid very loud band shows, which rules out my favorite artist, Freddie Mercury. Yet, I still enjoy the experience and take pride in ensuring everyone, especially those in wheelchairs, can enjoy live performances." Her dedication to accessibility and her love for the theater shine through in her words.
